In the German Bundestag resolution on Armenian Genocide, we spoke about Germany’s accountability, and no one, including the president of Turkey, can prohibit us.
Bundestag member and German Turk Cem Özdemir—who is also Co-Chairman of the German political party Alliance ‘90/The Greens, a consistent proponent of and preacher for Armenian Genocide recognition, and the person behind the aforesaid resolution—stated the aforesaid on the air of a German television.
Özdemir noted that the Turkish members of the Bundestag are receiving threats ever since the adoption of the said resolution, according to Agos Armenian bilingual weekly of Istanbul.
“It’s sad that there are [national] fanatics in all nations,” said the German Turkish MP. “But the most important [thing] is not to bow down before them. Those who became furious at once and are making uncivil statements definitely have not read the text [of the resolution], or have not listened to my speech. Here, we are speaking about the accountability of Germany. No one can forbid us, including the president of Turkey.”
On June 2, the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, formally recognized the Armenian Genocide, with the aforesaid resolution and with only one vote against and one abstention. The resolution also notes that the Bundestag regrets that the German government at the time did nothing to stop this crime against humanity, and therefore the Bundestag also acknowledges the respective historical accountability of Germany.
