A central square in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, on Wednesday was formally renamed after Mateos Sarkisian “Paramaz,” a hero of the Armenian national liberation struggle as well as a writer and political activist.

The event kicked off with the performance of the national anthems of Uruguay and Armenia.

Subsequently, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s message was read, which was addressed to the Montevideo authorities and Armenian community.

Montevideo Acting Intendant Óscar Curutchet and Armenia’s Honorary Consul to Uruguay, Ruben Aprahamian, performed the opening ceremony of this square.

In Curutchet’s words, the opening of the Mateos Sarkisian “Paramaz” Square symbolizes liberty, democracy, and military values.

“Paramaz is alive as long as we remember and honor him,” added the acting intendant of the Uruguayan capital city.
