On Friday, the Czech Deputy Prime Minister Andrej Babis apologized on the national television for claiming that during World War II people were sent to Lety concentration camp in the Czech Republic, since they did not want to work, reports the RIA Novosti. "I expressed myself poorly, it was taken out of context ... If I offended someone, then I apologize to everyone, " said Babis.
Earlier, as reported in Aktualne newspaper, Babis during his visit to Varnsdorf said that the concentration camp for Roma in Lety was in fact a labor camp. " It was a labor camp. Whoever avoided work was sent there, "said Babis.
After that expression, a number of politicians have demanded his immediate resignation. The leader of the opposition party ТОР 09 Miroslav Kalousek announced, that if Babis does not resign until Tuesday, that issue needs to be settled in the parliament.
At the same time, the Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka advised Babis to visit Lety, examine the "historical facts" and "how the Nazis and their supporters killed Gypsies," and apologize for the statement he had made.
