The German government denies the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry that the German Chancellor Angela Merkel favors the nomination of the Bulgarian European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva for the position of the UN Secretary General.
The spokesman of the German government Steffen Seibert refuted the news about the interference of the German government into the elections of the new UN chief. He stressed that there are 10 candidates contesting for that position, and Georgieva is not among them. Yesterday there were reports in the Bulgarian media, saying that the Russian President Vladimir Putin persuaded Merkel to support the candidacy of Georgieva for the position of the UNESCO director.
On September 11, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, said that Berlin wanted to influence on Moscow's position and added that those attempts were in vain . The German side claims that there wasn’t such a conversation at the G20- summit between the leaders of Germany and Russia .
