Deputies of the Parliament of Kazakhstan have proposed renaming the capital city Astana after incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The Kazakh MPs believe that the name of the country’s leader should be heard in the name of the nation’s capital city, according to Tengrinews.kz news website of Kazakhstan.

“We propose that the country’s constitution indicate First President, nation’s leader Nursultan Nazarbayev’s outstanding contribution to state-building,” reads the declaration on the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence. “That the name of the nation’s leader be expressed in the names of the capital city and other important facilities of the country.” 

The 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence will be celebrated on December 16.
