A Thai student activist has been arrested by local police after sharing a story about the country's new king Maha Vajiralongkorn, Gazeta reports, citing Fox News.

According to human rights lawyer Duangthip Karith, student Jatupat Boonpattararaksa was arrested Saturday in the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum on a charge of insulting the monarchy.

The BBC Thai story, whose link the student shared, told about King Vajiralongkorn, who took the throne succeeding his late father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The student may face 3-15 years in prison. The critics of Thai authorities noted that such a punishment is applied in order to “silence” political dissidents.  

On December 1, the last Thai prince Maha Vajiralongkorn became the country’s king.
