YEREVAN. – The Criminal Court of Appeal recently released under amnesty Mher Varosyan, the defendant in the case of the road accident that killed an 8-year-old girl.

Zhora Varosyan, the legal defender of Mher Varosyan, spoke to Armenian News-NEWS.am and confirmed this information.

The tragic accident took place on August 19, 2017 on the Alaverdi-Stepanavan motorway. An Opel Astra and a Volkswagen Golf crashed head-on. Opel Astra passengers Siranush and Gagik Vardumyan as well as Volkswagen Golf passenger Mariam Manyan died, and the other passengers of these vehicles suffered injuries.

On May 22, 2018 the Volkswagen Golf’s driver, Mher Varosyan, became a defendant in the case into this road accident, and he was charged with negligently causing death. But he was released on a signature bond.

On August 16, however, the Lori Province First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction found Mher Varosyan guilty as charged and sentenced him to five years in prison.

But Varosyan’s legal defender appealed this decision to the Criminal Court of Appeal, and the latter ruled for his release under the amnesty act that was adopted on November 1.

This court decision, however, has angered the parents of 8-year-old Siranush Vardumyan, who died in the road accident.
