A threat of war in Nagorno-Karabakh is steadily growing for the only reason, namely, Baku`s position, Richard Giragosian, Director of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies (ACNIS), told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
Washington has at last come to realize the Nagorno-Karabakh is potentially explosive, high-ranking U.S. officials` statements being evidence thereof. Yerevan`s reaction was as follows: "Well, you have at past come to realize the real situation in the region," Giragosian said.
He stressed that the OSCE Minsk Group has now focused its efforts on preventing Baku from resuming hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. The Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian leaders will focus their attention on this, that is, on Azerbaijan`s position, at their meeting in Sochi. However, an Armenian-Azerbaijani presidential agreement may be a major expectation from the meeting, Giragosian said.
Russia`s mediation - supported by the United State and France - is a significant factor. It can be concluded that Russia and the U.S. are closely cooperating in dealing with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. However, if they go on cooperating for a long time, this cooperation may run counter to the Armenian side`s interests: Russia may show more neutrality, which, amid the intensifying Russian-Armenian relations, is fraught with consequences for the Armenian side, the expert said.
