Sixty-four pedophilia cases were officially registered in Armenia last year, Yenok Shatvoryan, Chairman of the Hope and Help NGO, told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

He expressed concern over the increase in the number of sex crimes against minors.

"There are very many cases," Shatvoryan said. He dwelt on the incident in Hrazdan, Armenia. A woman allowed an inspector of the local water-supply service to have sex with her 12-year-girl for 100,000 AMD (about U.S. $270). "A deplorable fact. The criminal is at large now. He was amnestied and only paid a fine of 100,000 AMD. The girl’s mother was not prosecuted either," Yenokyan said.

It is noteworthy that harsh punishment is applied to pedophile in developed countries. In Armenia, however, they are sentenced to up to two years.
