A rally of the oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC) kicked off in the center of Yerevan at 5:30 p.m. local time. The rally is dedicated to the third anniversary of the March 1, 2008 events.

First President of Armenia and ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan, head of People’s Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchyan, chairman of “Republic” party’s political council Aram Sargsyan and heads of other parties are on the platform, the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent reported.

Opening the rally chairman of Armenian National Movement board Aram Manukyan said over three years the Armenian authorities have done nothing to solve the crime and reveal killers of peaceful citizens. Many people have gathered despite obstacles of the government, in particular ban for drivers to transport residents of the Armenian regions to Yerevan, he added. The participants honored memory of the March 1 victims with a moment of silence.

Armenian opposition did not recognize official results of the presidential election held on February 19, 2008. Leader of the opposition Levon Ter-Petrosyan organized rallies in the Liberty Square, in the center of Yerevan, which lasted until March 1. Thousands took to the streets demanding that official election results should be canceled. Ten people, including two law enforcers, became victims of opposition-government confrontation.

The Armenian National Congress is an oppositional union founded in 2008 headed by first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan. Oppositional union comprises 17 political parties.
