Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe formally announced the abdication of Emperor Akihito on Tuesday.
The statement was read out in a live broadcast on NHK by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.
“His Majesty is abdicating today in accordance with the provisions of a special law,” he said in a statement.
Japanese PM expressed gratitude to Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.
