YEREVAN. - Armenia is included in the list of dangerous countries on drug-resistant tuberculosis rate, head of Yerevan office of World Health Organization Elizabeth Danielyan, told at press conference on Thursday.

Armenia’s chief infection specialist Ara Asoyan stressed that the country has reached alarming proportions of weakness of antibiotic sensitivity which results in protraction of patients’ treatment and increasing expenses. Asoyan says it is a global problem caused by free sale of antibiotics in pharmacies without a prescription.

”Ten years ago results were achieved after using antibiotic for 2-3 days, while nowadays doctors have to change medicine,” he said adding that misuse of antibiotics leads to dysbacteriosis.

Experts believe there is a serious need for urgent action in Armenia, as well as necessity to control sale of antibiotics.
