The construction of the North-South highway is to get under way this September-October, Artur Baghdasaryan, Secretary of the Armenian National Security Council, told journalists April 23. This is an unprecedented communication project of regional importance. The 540-km-long highway will connect Armenia, Georgia and Iran.

Georgia has launched a large-scale program. The North-South highway will shorten the Yerevan-Batum route by 190 kilometers.

The program is an opportunity for the Georgian section of the highway to run through Akhaltsikha, a location of Armenian villages. The program is of both political and socio-economic importance, Baghdasaryan said.

Well-known construction companies will be involved in the program.
