The Greek leadership is making efforts to expand alliances in the wider region and improve its defenses.
In these efforts, and especially in the defense sector, Israel is becoming a key ally, Kathimerini said, citing senior government sources.
Last week, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made a day trip to Israel to meet with his counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu. They discussed defense cooperation, tourism, research and development, and economic cooperation.
According to the same sources, Israel wants to sell weapons and systems to Greece that will give Greece a quality advantage in the region. A new rifle for the Greek army, high-precision shells, and anti-unmanned aerial vehicle systems are among the projects being discussed.
Israel does not want further deterioration of its already difficult relationship with Turkey, but it will also not sacrifice regional alliances to improve those relations. In any case, Israeli officials believe that any rapprochement efforts by Ankara are mainly aimed at appealing to the new US administration.
