Over $30 million are needed for Capitol repairs and new security after ex-president Donald Trump's supporters stormed the building, CBS News reported.
"Statues, murals, historic benches and original shutters all suffered varying degrees of damage, primarily from pepper spray accretions and residue from chemical irritants and fire extinguishers," Architect of the Capitol J. Brett Blanton said at a House Appropriations Committee Hearing, according to his prepared testimony. "This damage to our precious artwork and statues will require expert cleaning and conservation."
Legislators have already approved the allocation of 30 million dollars to cover the costs described by Blanton, whose office is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the group of buildings that make up the Capitol complex, and for funding the perimeter fence that was built around the Capitol.
Blanton said more money is likely to be needed, especially if his office needs to renew contracts to continue building the fence beyond March 31.
He also asks for a comprehensive campus-wide safety assessment.
Its staff had just finished painting parts of the platform that was to host the inauguration of US President Joe Biden on the day of the storming of January 6, Blanton said.
When the rioters began storming the Capitol, its staff sheltered some of the Congress employees in their workshops, while other members of the team went to the roof of the building to remove chemical irritants that were released into the territory.
