UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will pay a visit to Turkey to participate in International Conference on Somalia, on May 22, his spokesperson Martin Nesirky stated at a briefing in UN headquarters in New York.

The forum is organized jointly by UN and Turkish Government. Issues related to the national reconciliation in Somalia will be in focus.

As a result of the civil war broken out in the early 1990s, Somalia was divided into several semi-autonomous entities and plunged into anarchy. The local government does not control over the territory of the state. All this crated sprang to piracy and became a major threat to the safety of international navigation.

According to International Maritime Bureau (IMB), Somali pirates made 217 attacks in 2009 and seized 47 vessels, receiving a ransom of about U.S. $ 82m, RIA Novosti reports.
