YEREVAN. - The Karabakh conflict broke out due to violation of Nagorno-Karabakh people’s right to self-determination by Azerbaijan, Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan stated at a joint press conference with Polish President in Yerevan on Thursday.

Speaking about the presidents’ meeting in Kazan, Serzh Sargsyan stressed the Armenian side hoped for success, but the expectations were not fulfilled, though the success was close. Everyone must respect Nagorno-Karabakh people’s right to decide their fate, security and development in their homeland, he noted.

The Armenian leader also stressed democracy is the highest value. “We will be happy, if European agencies contribute to democracy strengthening in Nagorno-Karabakh, because Karabakh is moving in this direction. The evidence thereof are democratic elections in the country. I would not call the Kazan meeting a fiasco despite unjustified expectations,” the President stated.

The Armenian President emphasized Azerbaijan should improve domestic atmosphere and stop poisoning the minds of their own people. “Armenian and Karabakh people demand to resolve the Karabakh conflict on the basis of international principles, in accordance with the Madrid document. The requirements of the Armenian side are similar to those of the international community,” Sargsyan noted.

In his turn, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said Warsaw adheres to the principle of territorial integrity and people’s right to self-determination in solving such complicated conflicts: “Poland considers Europe’s intervention in such issues possible only after the final resolution the conflict, even if it regards technical or other kinds of assistance,” he noted.
