The government of French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has been dissolved after the parliament expressed no confidence, France 24 reports.

A total of 331 out of 574 parliamentarians voted in favor of the motion of no confidence, which removed Barnier and his government from office.

A majority of 288 votes was needed to pass the decision.

No French government had lost a no-confidence vote since Georges Pompidou in 1962.

French President Emmanuel Macron plans to immediately appoint a new prime minister, according to various sources, Reuters reports.

But who he will choose to replace Michel Barnier is still unclear.

The president's respective list includes left-wing candidate Bernard Cazeneuve, former minister Xavier Bertrand, and minister of armed forces Sebastien Lecornu.
