U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced his choice for U.S. ambassador to Panama, days after threatening to take control of the Panama Canal.

“I am pleased to announce that Kevin Marino Cabrera will serve as acting United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, a country that is robbing us of the Panama Canal beyond their wildest dreams,” Trump wrote on Truth Social late Wednesday night. - Few understand Latin American politics as well as Kevin - he will do a FANTASTIC job representing our country's interests in Panama!”

Cabrera, a Miami native, won election in his district two years ago, according to NBC News.

A staunch Trump supporter, he previously served as Trump's 2020 campaign manager in Florida and was a member of the Republican National Committee's platform committee.

He was born to Cuban immigrant parents and graduated from Miami-Dade College and Florida International University. His nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.

Trump's announcement came after he mentioned the Panama Canal in a series of lengthy social media posts on Christmas Day and suggested that the U.S. should expand its territory by taking control of Greenland, Canada, as well as the Panama Canal.
