Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Union (EU) Commission and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has proposed to extend the mandate of the EU civilian monitoring mission in Armenia for another two years, the press office of the High Representative has told the RFE/RL Armenian service.

The EU member states have welcomed this proposal and are currently discussing the necessary legal acts with the relevant bodies of the EU Council, whose decision on this extension is expected in the coming days, according to the written response provided to the RFE/RL Armenian service.

Azerbaijan, on the other hand, accuses this EU mission of spying and disrupting the stability of the region.

In response to these accusations, the office of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy has said that the mandate of this EU mission in Armenia is very clear: to monitor and report on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border situation on the ground from Armenia and to contribute to the efforts of the EU regarding the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement.

Since the deployment of this monitoring mission, the number of armed incidents in the border areas has decreased considerably. As is known, the EU regularly informs Azerbaijan about the activities of this mission, added the office of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
