Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday he would meet French President Emmanuel Macron to talk about Ukraine on Wednesday ahead of an extraordinary summit of European Union leaders scheduled for Thursday, Reuters reported.

Orban also said he sees more chance of finding ways to cooperate on EU common security than on Ukraine at Thursday's summit. Responding to a reporter's question, Orban confirmed that he had a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Sunday and that they discussed “everything.”

Earlier, it became known that Hungary blocked a draft EU document providing security guarantees for Ukraine and a new military aid package.

At a meeting of EU ambassadors on Friday, Hungary blocked a draft text on Ukraine that contained language on security guarantees the European Union could provide to Kiev as well as a new military aid package.

The decision was part of a broader disagreement among EU countries over the approach to supporting Ukraine in a war.

For his part, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo said his country would refuse further financial or military aid to Ukraine.

He also rejected the so-called “peace through strength,” which he believes is an unrealistic policy.
