The US should not return kindness with insult, especially with harsh tariffs, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Friday, commenting on the US decision to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods—and using the fentanyl issue as a pretext.

Fentanyl abuse in America is a problem for the US, which Americans should deal with on their own, Wang said, Xinhua reports.

China has always been resolute in combating drug trafficking and production, and is the country with the strictest and most comprehensive antidrug policy in the modern world, the Chinese FM stressed.

Wang noted that back in 2019, China, at the request of the US, was the first in the world to introduce strict control over all fentanyl-related substances.

"Let's see what the Americans have gained from tariffs and trade wars over the years. What happened to the negative balance? Has it decreased, or the opposite? As for manufacturing competitiveness: Has it strengthened, or the opposite? How are things with inflation? Has it become better? How are people's lives? Has it become better? Our trade relations with the US are built on reciprocity and parity. Cooperation brings mutual benefits. And if improper measures are not stopped, China will not be slow to respond," the Chinese FM noted.
