The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and many other prominent figures represents a serious attack on democracy. This is stated in a statement by the French Foreign Ministry.

As a member state of the Council of Europe and a candidate state for membership of the European Union, Turkey has voluntarily made commitments in this area.

Compliance with these commitments is central to our relations, as well as to the relations between Turkey and the European Union.
