US President Donald Trump will reduce the previously allocated “emergency budget expenditures” by almost $3 billion, $2.5 billion of which were intended for foreign aid. The portal Semafor reports, citing sources in the White House.

According to them, Trump will reduce the amount of funds allocated as emergency funds under the bill to increase the national debt 2023, adopted by the administration of former US President Joe Biden.

The portal writes that about $2.5 billion that Trump plans to cut was to be allocated for foreign aid, including support for NGOs dealing with migration and refugees, economic development in Moldova and Georgia and projects related to inclusiveness. The measures would not affect military aid to allies, including Ukraine.

One official told the portal that some of the foreign aid funding “has not been thoroughly vetted, not well thought out.” “In fact, not only can they not be classified as emergencies, but they include probably one of the lowest-priority types of spending that could be allocated,” he said.

The remaining roughly $9.4 billion in emergency funding in the 2023 law will remain untouched, Semafor said.
