Bulgaria began on Monday to use high-tech drones to monitor its border with Turkey, fulfilling part of a compromise deal aimed at securing its entry into the Schengen Area, Euractiv reports.

Back in 2022, Austria made its support for Bulgaria’s Schengen accession conditional on tighter controls at the Bulgarian-Turkish border, initially pushing for the construction of a border wall.

The Commission countered that proposal by offering to fund drone surveillance instead.
