Simon Vandenbroucke, a staff member of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Georgia, was denied entry into the country, Novosti Gruzia reports.

Vandenbroucke on Wednesday was returned to his country of departure on the nearest flight from the Georgian capital Tbilisi’s international airport.

The reasons for the refusal of entry are not specified.

The Delegation of the EU to Georgia has not yet commented on this incident.

Simon Vandenbroucke works in the aforesaid delegation’s collaboration department, which is part of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The incident has caused a sharp reaction among the ruling Georgian Dream party’s critics of in Europe. Rasa Jukneviciene, a European Parliament member from Lithuania, has stated that the actions of the Georgian government were getting closer to the policies of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
