Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said he would resign on Tuesday, just hours after far-right politician Geert Wilders pulled his Freedom Party party out of a right-wing coalition, likely leading to early elections, Reuters reported.

Ministers from Wilders' party will leave the government, while the remaining ministers will continue in an interim cabinet. 

Elections are not likely to be held until October at the earliest, and forming a new government traditionally takes months in the Netherlands' fractious political landscape.

Earlier, Tuesday, Wilders said his party was pulling out because the other three coalition partners did not want to support his ideas on asylum and immigration.

The other parties in the coalition now have the opportunity to try to form a minority government, although they are not expected to do so. Opposition parties on Tuesday called for new elections.
