US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a plan to refine and sell up to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil that had been stuck in Venezuela due to the US sanctions.
Trump announced on social media that Venezuela would sell 30 to 50 million barrels of oil under sanctions, which will be sent directly to the US, under a plan to be implemented immediately by Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.
“This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States!” Trump said.
Based on latest Venezuelan oil prices, the deal could be worth up to $1.9 billion, Reuters reports. US officials have yet to work out the legal basis for seizing the Venezuelan oil, although the US has accused the Venezuelan tankers of violating US sanctions while transporting Iranian and Venezuelan oil.
Trump suggested also that the US would help rebuild Venezuela’s oil infrastructure, benefiting major oil companies such as Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips, which were hurt by former President Hugo Chavez’s nationalization of Venezuelan oil, as well as Chevron Corporation, which continues to operate there.
Executives from US oil companies are expected to visit the White House as early as Thursday to discuss investments in Venezuela, said three sources familiar with the plans.
