The US government assesses that about 80 people were killed during Saturday’s military raid to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, including dozens of fatalities that resulted from a gun battle at his compound in Caracas, according to officials familiar with the matter, The Washington Post reports.

One source said at least 67 people were killed in the dawn attack, while another source put the death toll at between 75 and 80.

US officials said the estimates included Venezuelan and Cuban security forces, as well as civilians caught in the crossfire. The figures roughly match those shared by Venezuelan officials in recent days.

About a half-dozen American service members were injured in the operation, some of whom were shot during a shootout near Maduro's compound. Two other officials said several of them were taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas for surgery.

The Pentagon said in a statement on Tuesday that two American service members were still recovering from injuries sustained in the operation. Five other wounded had returned to duty.
