Beijing supports the Cuban authorities in defending their sovereignty and calls on the US to stop pressuring Havana, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday.

"China firmly supports Cuba in defending its national sovereignty and security, and opposes external interference, calling on the US to immediately lift the blockade, sanctions, and any [other] form of pressure on Cuba," the Chinese MFA spokesperson said.

Mao added that the US should do more to safeguard peace and stability in Central America.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday advised Cuba to cooperate with Washington before it is too late. In addition, the American leader announced that no more oil or money would go to Cuba, which, he said, had lived for many years on the large amounts of oil and money coming from Venezuela.

In response, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced that his country was still ready to resist US aggression.
