President Vahagn Khachaturyan has signed the law on amendments to the Law on Holidays and Remembrance Days of Armenia.
Accordingly, January 27 has been declared a Day of Remembrance for Those Who Died in Defense of the Homeland and will be a non-working day in Armenia.
The authors of this initiative were ruling majority faction MP and deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Ruben Rubinyan, and lawmaker Gegham Nazaryan, who has left the opposition "Armenia" Faction of the NA.
Rubinyan had noted in this regard that on that day they will honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the defense of the homeland during military operations of various years.
And regarding the selection of this day, he had said that it was necessary to choose a day that is not the day of any specific military event for Armenia.
“We chose January 27 as the day before [the Armenian] Army Day because traditionally on January 28, officials visit Yerablur [Military Pantheon in Yerevan],” Rubinyan had said.
