Today, January 27, Armenia pays tribute to its sons and daughters who fell on the battlefield for the homeland.
“The French Embassy in Armenia joins the Armenian people,” the embassy said in a statement on this occasion.
Last week, the National Assembly (NA) passed a law which established January 27 as memorial day in Armenia for those who died defending the homeland.
Today is a non-working day in Armenia.
The authors of this initiative were ruling majority faction MP and deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Ruben Rubinyan, and lawmaker Gegham Nazaryan, who has left the opposition "Armenia" Faction of the NA.
Rubinyan had noted in this regard that on that day they will honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the defense of the homeland during military operations of various years.
And regarding the selection of this day, he had said that it was necessary to choose a day that is not the day of any specific military event for Armenia.
“We chose January 27 as the day before [the Armenian] Army Day because traditionally on January 28, officials visit Yerablur [Military Pantheon in Yerevan],” Rubinyan had said.
