Armenian Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan handed in a resignation to the Armenian National Assembly on February 1.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, Harutyunyan will be appointed Representative of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Central Asia.  In an interview with NEWS.am, Harutyunyan said that refusing such an offer would be “a pathology” as one gets such a chance “once in a century.” Armen Harutyunyan was appointed RA Ombudsman on December 20, 2006, for six years. At the moment several candidates are rumored for the post.

As to eligible candidates for the post of Armenian Ombudsman, Harutyunyan told journalists: “I have not spoken on the matter. An ombudsman is appointed by law. This is a full-fledged institution and I think the next ombudsman will be able to carry out efficient activities,” he said.
