The Golan Heights is Syrian territory occupied by Israel, a spokeswoman for German government Ulrike Demmer said on Friday.

Her remarks came in response to comment on the US President Donald Trump’s call to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the strategic territory, Reuters reported.

“If national borders should be changed it must be done through peaceful means between all those involved,” she noted adding: “The government rejects unilateral steps.”

As reported earlier, Trump declared the need to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

“After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!” He tweeted.

His tweet came after the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Jerusalem.

After Donald Trump made the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted: "At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you President Trump!”

Israel seized much of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War.
