China is opposed to unilateral US sanctions against Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and urges Washington to make efforts to maintain stability in the region, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Thursday.

US authorities on Wednesday entered the sanctions list of Iran's FM Mohammad Javad Zarif. A senior US administration official said that Washington no longer considers Zarif a priority contact - he was such during the discussion of the nuclear deal from which the US withdrew. Zarif later stated that the US imposed sanctions against him because they considered him a threat to the US agenda.

According to her, talks and dialogue are the main ways to solve the problem.

The US has repeatedly stated that it is ready to negotiate with Iran without preconditions.

The representative of the Chinese FM also expressed hope that the US will make more efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region, rather than add fuel to the fire.
