About 30 Azerbaijani opposition journalists today protested against the country’s repressive law on the media with a demonstration held in front of the parliament.

According to Turan, they expressed discontent with the bill on the media which restricts the rights of the press and freedom of speech. The protesters said they were outraged by the fact that the parliament is disregarding the calls and demands of the journalistic community for amendments to the bill.

The journalists read a resolution by which they demanded that the Members of Parliament consider the opinion of the journalistic community and make the necessary supplements to the bill. “This law contradicts the Constitution of Azerbaijan and the European Convention on Human Rights. If our opinion is not taken into consideration, journalists will disregard this repressive law,” the resolution reads.
