Turkish intelligence agencies prevented an Iranian-planned attack on Israelis in Istanbul, the Turkish authorities announced it on Thursday,  ahead of Foreign Minister Yair Lapid's visit to Ankara.

The report said that last Friday, June 17, intelligence agencies managed to prevent the kidnapping of the former Israeli ambassador, who arrived in Istanbul with his wife and lived in a hotel in the city. In addition, attacks on Israeli tourists were being prepared. At least 10 suspects were detained.

The apprehensions were carried out in the hotel and in three private apartments. The apprehended men included both foreigners and Turkish nationals. Iranian intelligence agents and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officers posed as foreign students, businessmen and tourists. It later became known that sniper rifles and other weapons were seized from the terrorists.

Ankara noted that the abduction and terrorist attacks were prevented at the planning stage. An investigation is underway.

Turkish media report that the Mossad contacted the Israelis who were to be attacked and rushed them to Israel. More details later emerged: the terrorists were arrested as a result of information provided by Israel to the Turkish intelligence service, MIT. The Israeli and Turkish intelligence agencies actively cooperated during the operation to track down and apprehend the Iranian agents, the report noted.
