Baku believes that the presence of the EU mission on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan somehow violates the “legitimate interests” of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, speaking at a joint news conference Tuesday in Baku with his visiting Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, said that the presence of the first EU mission was a result of consensus, as this mission was temporary and pursued two goals: to strengthen confidence measures and help delimitation of the border.

Both goals were not achieved, Bayramov stated, adding that Azerbaijan did not see any effective steps by this mission.

"Furthermore, since the beginning of the activity of the mission, the position of the Armenian side has become more destructive. As for the smooth transition to the second part of the mission, it happened in violation of the agreements in Geneva in October," he said.

He added that Baku does not agree with the statements that this EU mission has nothing to do with Azerbaijan.

"We do not accept such reasoning. It is not an abstract mission. It affects the legitimate interests of Azerbaijan. We are worried and have repeatedly expressed our concerns publicly and through diplomatic channels. We will carefully monitor how that mission is going," Bayramov said.

To note, the question of sending the EU mission to Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan arose after the latter's military aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia last September.
