YEREVAN. – Only two women were elected Armenian National Assembly (NA) MPs through single-seat voting during Sunday’s NA elections.

They are Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) member Karine Poghosyan and non-party affiliate, International Masis Tabak Company’s Executive Director Marina Marabyan, who was supported by the RPA during the elections.   

A total of eleven women were running for a parliamentary mandate in the country’s 41 majority election constituencies.

Eight political parties and one bloc participated in the parliament elections in Armenia: Republican Party of Armenian, Prosperous Armenia Party, Orinats Yerkir, Armenian National Congress, Heritage Party, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, the Communist Party of Armenia, Democratic Party of Armenia and United Armenians Party. For entering the 131-seat National Assembly (Parliament), the parties must poll over 5% of votes, while blocs - over 7%.
