Visas issued for students became the main reason for discontent due to which Turkey and Azerbaijan failed to agree on lifting of visa regime December 25, Azerbaijani APA news agency reports.
According to the source, Turkish side wanted common rules to be applied to students, however Azerbaijan opposed the idea. Baku proposes not to include the issue of student visas in the agreement.
Thus, Turkish side accepted the demand of official Baku and decided to consider the issue of student visas later, the source says.
Commenting on the issue, spokesman for Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Elkhan Polukhov stated that Baku and Ankara will continue the talks on cancellation of visa regime between two countries. According to him, there are certain internal procedures that have to be agreed upon and “work continues.”
The signing of agreement on bilateral lifting of visa regime was planned in the course of Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov’s visit to Turkey.
