Armenian FM Edward Nalbandian kicked off his visit to Costa Rica with a meeting Thursday with President Víctor Emilio Granados Calvo of the country’s Legislative Assembly.

Head of the Costa Rican parliament underscored Nalbandian’s visit which, in his words, will become a positive stimulus to the development of cooperation between the two countries. In his turn, Nalbandian stressed that Armenia attaches an importance to developing cooperation with Costa Rica. Víctor Emilio Granados Calvo stated that he will initiate the forming of a Costa Rican parliamentary friendship group with Armenia’s National Assembly (NA). In response, Edward Nalbandian noted that the NA will be interested in establishing interparliamentary ties with Costa Rica.  

The interlocutors exchanged views on regional and international matters. Armenia’s FM briefed the Costa Rican parliament leader on the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. “The more Azerbaijan continues hampering the [OSCE Minsk Group] Co-Chairing troika’s efforts to resolve the matter, that many more new decisions will be adopted similar to the Australian state of New South Wales’ resolution on recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,” Nalbandian stressed.     

On the same day, Armenia’s FM met with Maria Janete Ruiz Delgado, Chairperson of the Costa Rican Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.   

Separately, Edward Nalbandian got together with the Costa Rican FM José Enrique Castillo Barrantes.  

Barrantes stressed that he highly appreciates his Armenian colleague’s visit to Costa Rica. “Our countries have many similarities, and I am convinced that we will use this opportunity to make arrangement on the development of cooperation,” he noted. “Armenia conducts an active and a proactive foreign policy, one of whose most important components is the acquisition of new partners, and we are taking practical steps in this direction,” Edward Nalbandian stated in his turn.     

They exchanged views on several avenues for cooperation, and made arrangements on accrediting non-resident ambassadors and appointing honorary consuls in Yerevan and San José alike.  

Edward Nalbandian briefed his Costa Rican colleague on the priorities of Armenia’s foreign policy and the measures being taken by Armenia and the international community toward settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Wrapping up his trip to Latin America, Armenia’s FM headed to Paris, where he is scheduled to meet Saturday with his Azerbaijani counterpart and the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs.
