YEREVAN.- Construction of Vanadzor-Fioletovo railway section may cost $200-250 million, South Caucasus Railway CJSC Director General Victor Rebets told reporters on Friday.

He said a feasibility study of the project is being conducted. Changes depend on several variants of the route, including the presence of tunnels.

In early 2011, the then Minister of Transport and Communication Manuk Vardanyan estimated the project at $100 million, noting that the Armenian side is ready to allocate $49.9 million from the Anti-Crisis Fund. Later, he also announced the amount of $120-150 million.

Asked by Armenian News - NEWS.am, Rebets explained that only expert evaluation was voiced at that time.

“A detailed assessment is being prepared to identify the cost,” he stressed.

A 37.8 kilometer long Vanadzor-Fioletovo branch would complete the ring in northern Armenia and reduce transportation distance from Yerevan to the Georgian border.
