YEREVAN. – Armenian PM Tigran Sargsyan received US Ambassador to Armenia, John Heffern, and US Agency for International Development (USAID)/Armenia Mission Director Karen Hilliard.  

The interlocutors expressed a satisfaction with respect to the ongoing bilateral cooperation and, subsequently, the PM was briefed on the five-year strategy to support Armenia’s development, which USAID is designing. Heffern noted that, with this program, Armenia and US will enter a new phase of cooperation. 

In her turn, Hilliard informed that the US government wishes to sign with the Armenian government a new agreement on support for democracy and governance programs in Armenia, and this document will be one of its kind in Europe and Eurasia.   

Within the framework of this agreement, USAID plans to allocate $32 million as financial support to Armenia for the next five years. 

“This [agreement] is a new level in the cooperation between the governments of our two countries, which [that is, the agreement] may set a precedent for the countries in the region,” Karen Hilliard stated. 

Tigran  Sargsyan welcomed the new program by USAID and noted that Armenia stands ready to expand bilateral cooperation.

The aforesaid agreement is planned to be signed before March 31.
