Nikos Anastasiadis is elected as the new President of Cyprus. Receiving the support of the country’s three right-wing political forces, he garnered over 57.48 percent of the votes in Sunday’s presidential runoff.

Left-wing candidate Stavros Malas, on the other hand, received 42.5 percent.

But the voter turnout in the runoff was lower than the first round of the lections, as more than 18 percent of the 545,000 eligible voters did not cast their ballots on Sunday, whereas this figure was 16.86 percent on February 17, ITAR-TASS News Agency reports.       

Anastasiadis favors reaching an agreement, as soon as possible, with EU and IMF toward providing loans to Cyprus.

Nikos Anastasiadis’ swearing-in ceremony is slated for Thursday, and his government will take office on Friday.
