Western countries are unlikely to be concerned about the post-election situation in Armenia, Oxford University Professor and South Caucasus expert Neil MacFarlane told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

In his view, the campaign of opposition Heritage Party Chairman, former FM Raffi Hovannisian—who was declared runner-up to the winner, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, as a result of the presidential election that was conducted on February 18, but who claims to be the real winner in the vote—does not discredit Armenia’s political stability before the eyes of Western society and the analysts.

Furthermore, as per MacFarlane, Hovannisian apparently lost his former positions while the opposition does not fully unite around his objectives.

“In addition, it seems the government responds to the demands with [its] known flexibility,” the analyst noted.

That is why, according to the Oxford University professor, if we speak about the European Union, there is no serious concern there.

“Something could change [in Armenia] in case of serious unrest, but this already seems unlikely,” Neil MacFarlane concluded.
