An incident occurred during a mourning event that was held on Wednesday, April 24, in Turkey’s City of Izmir. The event was devoted to the 98th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Those that gathered at Izmir’s Basmahane Square paid tribute and lit candles in memory of the Armenians that were killed in 1915, Milliyet daily of Turkey reports. But a group of People’s Salvation Party members, who entered the square at that time, began to throw flagsticks and plastic water bottles toward those that had gathered. In their turn, the participants in the remembrance event retaliated to those that had attacked them.

But the law enforcement officers, who were on duty nearby the area, immediately prevented the further escalation of the scuffle, and they created a human chain between the two groups.

Following the commemoration event, the groups dispersed without an incident.

To note, the People’s Salvation Party members attempted to carry out provocations during a similar event, which was held on the same day in Istanbul’s Taksim Square, but the police stopped them.
