Italy, which is the commanding country of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping mission, petitioned to Armenia with a proposal to include an Armenian detachment in this mission.
If approved, the detachment will ensure the security of UNIFIL Headquarters.
The respective talks are in progress, and two Armenian peacekeeping platoons are expected to be sent to Lebanon within the year.
To note, ever since 2012, an officer from the Armenian Armed Forces is included in the UN Observer Mission in Lebanon.
Incidentally, Armenia has also received a proposal to join the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali. It was decided to hold talks on providing, at this phase, solely Armenian military observers to this mission.
