YEREVAN. – The recent decision of Turkish ruling party to hold a rally of its supporters is a responsible move as the consequences can be unpredictable, Armenian turkologist Ruben Safrastyan said.

He believes the authorities will try to organize the demonstration so that they could avoid clashes. Safrastayn stated an interesting fact: in the past the demonstrators did not gather again after the force was used by law enforcers.

 “No everything is different. Protestors are spending days in Taksim Square. This proves the Turkish state has lost its strength,” the analyst told reporters on Monday.

He noted that Turkish elite in fact did not protect the protest movement. Almost no representatives of the political parties were present at the square which proves the balance of political forces does not reflect the current developments.

“It is obvious that interests of political circles and mass protests do not coincide,” he added.

Mass anti-governmental riots broke out around two weeks ago when law enforcers tried to disperse those protecting Gezi Park. The environmental protests turned in to political ones.
