YEREVAN. – The more women participate in the work of local authorities, the more effective the results will be, Armenian Deputy Premier said.

Armen Gevorgyan spoke about the role of women in local self-government bodies during the session of the Bureau of CoE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities being held in Yerevan (photos).

Owing to national peculiarities, Armenian women prefer family to public activities, but the situation is changing. Women have been recently more involved in politics and public activities, Gevorgyan said.

Although the number of women involved in politics is not enough, the government is taking efforts to change the situation. Armen Gevorgyan, who is the Minister of Territorial Administration, noted that despite low presence of women among community leaders, half of the administration employees are women.
