YEREVAN. – If First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva’s presidential nomination is registered, this will mean Azerbaijan understands that the country’s rating will fall once and for all in terms of democracy and liberties, and therefore they decided to take such step. 

Armenian Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation Director, political scientist Stepan Grigoryan told the abovementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“[Official] Baku realizes that if [incumbent President] Ilham Aliyev’s candidacy is nominated for a third time, the international community will consider Azerbaijan as a Middle East-type authoritarian country. It is possible that a decision to withdraw [candidacy] is made later,” the analyst noted.
